A gas barbecue is hot within minutes, easy to control precisely and produces hardly any smoke. Here you'll find trolley grills from compact two-burner models to large grill stations – with current offers from several shops.

How many burners do you need?

The number of burners mainly determines how flexibly you can cook. Two burners are enough for two to four people and simple zones: one side hot, the other off. Three to four burners are the standard for families, because they let you grill directly and indirectly at the same time – sausages at the front, say, and a joint next to them with the lid closed.

Six burners pay off if you regularly cook for larger groups or need plenty of space for vegetables and sides. More burners also mean higher gas consumption and more room needed on the patio, though.

Power, materials and lid

Total output in kilowatts says little without the cooking area. What matters more is how evenly the heat is distributed and how well the lid seals. A tight-fitting, double-walled lid keeps the temperature stable during indirect grilling and saves gas.

As for grates: cast iron stores heat and gives strong sear marks, but needs care to prevent rust. Enamelled grates are easy to clean; stainless steel lasts a long time but transfers slightly less heat. Stainless steel burners generally last much longer than painted steel ones.

  • Choose a cooking area to match the number of people
  • Lid with thermometer for indirect grilling
  • Stainless steel burners, cast iron or enamelled grates
  • Side tables and a cabinet for the gas bottle and accessories
  • 50 mbar regulator for the German market

Extras worth having – and those that aren't

A high-heat zone (often called a "sizzle" or "turbo zone") brings steaks up to temperature quickly and makes sense for meat lovers. A side burner replaces a second hob for sauces or sides. A rear burner (back burner) is only worth it if you want to use a rotisserie.

LED lighting or Bluetooth thermometers are nice to have but are no sign of quality. Pay more attention to build quality, sturdy wheels, good spare-parts availability and clear instructions.

Price brackets at a glance

Basic gas trolley grills with two or three burners are often available for the low hundreds. At that level, manufacturers usually save on sheet thickness, burner material and lid seals. In the mid-range you'll find stainless steel burners, cast iron grates, a high-heat zone and better build quality. Premium models also offer thicker materials, long warranties and a well-stocked spare-parts range. Which class is worth it depends on how often you grill: if you fire up the barbecue every weekend, durable components pay off. Our price history shows you whether an offer is genuinely cheap compared with earlier prices.
