The kettle is the most versatile charcoal grill: with the lid closed you can cook steaks, chicken, pizza or pulled pork. Here you can compare models from compact sizes up to 57 cm.
Why kettle barbecues are so popular
The round shape with a lid makes hot air circulate inside. This means you can grill not only directly over the embers but also indirectly: the charcoal sits around the edges or on one side, and the food cooks next to it as in a fan oven. That's how whole chickens, roasts or ribs turn out well.
You control the temperature with the vents at the top and bottom. More air means more heat; less air means a lower temperature and a longer burn time. With a little practice, you can keep a constant temperature for hours.
Which size is right?
The grate diameter is the key measurement. These sizes have become established across many manufacturers, so accessories are often compatible too.
- Around 37–41 cm: for one or two people, picnics and small balconies (where permitted)
- Around 47 cm: for two to four people, still easy to transport
- 57 cm: the family standard, with a huge choice of accessories
- Larger than 57 cm: for big gatherings and long low & slow sessions
Quality features in detail
Look for an enamelled bowl and lid that can cope with heat and weather. A lid thermometer, an ash-catcher system and a lid holder make everyday use easier. A hinged grate or hinged sections make it easier to add charcoal.
On cheaper models, sheet thickness and the fit of the lid are often weaker. A lid that lets in stray air makes temperature control difficult. Also check whether replacement grates and accessories such as a pizza stone or cast iron grate are available in your size.
Useful accessories for your kettle
A few extras make a kettle much more versatile. A chimney starter gets the charcoal glowing quickly and safely, charcoal baskets make indirect grilling easier, and a digital core thermometer takes the guesswork out of doneness. If you like baking pizza, go for a pizza stone or pizza insert; for burgers and fish, a griddle or cast iron plate is worthwhile. Whatever you buy, make sure it matches your kettle size.
