A well-fitting cover protects your barbecue from rain, UV light, leaves and pollen and extends its life. Here you can compare covers for gas barbecues, kettles, smokers and kamados.

Finding the right size

Measure the width, depth and height of your grill including side tables, handles and thermometer. The cover should be slightly larger so it's easy to pull over, but not so large that it flaps in the wind. For kettles there are round covers to match the diameter; for gas trolley grills, rectangular ones.

Straps, Velcro fasteners or a drawstring at the hem keep the cover in place even in wind.

Material: waterproof and breathable

Most covers are made of polyester fabric with a PVC or PU coating. Higher denier ratings (such as 420D or 600D) indicate thicker, more tear-resistant fabric. It's important that condensation can escape – otherwise the grill rusts under the cover. Vents help with this.

  • Fabric weight and UV resistance
  • Vents against condensation
  • Fasteners against wind
  • Handles for easy removal
  • Fit for side tables and cabinet

Important: let it cool first

Only put the cover on once the grill has cooled down completely. Hot parts can melt the fabric or, in the worst case, start a fire. With a charcoal grill, the embers must be completely out.

In winter it's worth cleaning the grill before covering it and storing it dry. The gas bottle stays outdoors or in a well-ventilated place – never in the cellar.

Caring for the cover

Even the best cover ages. UV light makes coatings brittle over time, and seams can start to leak. Clean the cover now and then with water and mild soap, let it dry completely and don't store it folded up wet over winter. If the fabric cracks or lets water through, replacing it makes sense – a new cover costs far less than rust damage to burners and lid.

For kamados and smokers there are special covers that take account of their shape and attachments such as a firebox or side tables. For built-in grills in outdoor kitchens, a cover for the grill unit or the whole worktop helps.
